Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease is a potentially lethal disease that can affect dogs, cats, and ferrets. Fortunately, it is an easily preventable disease. The disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states of the US, and in Maine, we have been seeing increasing numbers of cases in the last few years. The disease is spread by a single bite of a mosquito, and, living in Maine, we are no stranger to numerous mosquitos! Please view the following video for a quick overview.

New Heartworm and Intestinal Parasite Preventative Available in 2017!

The Doctors and Staff at Annabessacook Veterinary Clinic have recently conducted a review of parasite control options for our patients. After a close comparison of approved veterinary products, our veterinarians have decided to recommend Interceptor® Plus (milbemycin oxime/praziquantel) for the prevention of heartworm disease and treatment and control of adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), roundworms, whipworm and tapeworms in dogs. We’d like to explain our decision.

A monthly chew that protects against five threats to your dog

Interceptor Plus protects against five dangerous threats to your dog. Heartworms aren’t the only parasite that pose a danger to your pet. Your dog may also be at risk for common intestinal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. These parasites can cause diarrhea, vomiting, anemia, and in some cases, even death. Roundworm and hookworm eggs passed in your dog’s bowel movements can contaminate the yard and be passed to family members.

Interceptor Plus is a chewable tablet for dogs

More than 96% of dogs accepted the chicken-flavored chewable tablet overall.

Safe for puppies and small dogs Interceptor Plus is safe for puppies as young as six weeks, and for dogs weighing as little as two pounds. There’s no need to change medications if your dog grows larger or as they get older.

For these reasons, Interceptor Plus is our choice for preventing heartworm disease and controlling these intestinal parasites. Please let us know if you have any additional questions about this recommendation.

Our responsibility as veterinarians is to provide pets with products we believe are the best choices for their individual needs. As a responsible and loving pet owner, we know you want the best for your pet. Together, we can help pets live longer, healthier, higher-quality lives.

Important Safety Information

Treatment with fewer than 6 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Interceptor Plus, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infections. The safety of Interceptor Plus has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in lactating females. Please see full product information for more details.
